WiLAN (WILN), the patent licensing company run by CEO Jim Skippen, said Copy Protection LLC, has entered into a patent license agreement with Netflix Inc.

The consideration paid to WiLAN and all other terms of the license agreement are confidential.

Shares of WiLAN surged 21% or 26 cents to $1.43 in early trading. They've traded between 97 cents and $3.29 over the past year.

The Netflix license is the company’s third licensing deal of the week.

WiLAN on Tuesday, Dec. 22 said it licensed its wireless patent portfolio including Wi-Fi, HSPA, CDMA and LTE-related technologies to NEC Corp. WiLAN on Monday, Dec. 21 said its Advanced Microscopy Inc. unit entered into a settlement agreement with Keyence Corp. of America. Terms of those deals also were confidential

Under its licensing partnership model, WiLAN typically offers little to no upfront payment to acquire portfolios. Patent vendors receive all or most of their compensation after WiLAN has successfully licensed the relevant portfolio.
